The offseason can get boring real fast. Red Wings hockey maybe a flaming garbage pile, but their our flaming garbage pile! At this point of the offseason, any kind of news can be refreshing – so get hyped! The Red Wings have signed David Pope to a two year entry-level contract!
The terms of the deal have yet to be announced.
The University of Nebraska-Omaha product delayed the signing of his first pro contract to finish up classes at UNO, even though his season ended a few months ago. Now done with his schooling, he was able to get this deal done before August 15th, in which he would have become an unrestricted free-agent.
The twenty-three year-old was the 109th overall pick in the 2013 draft. This past season, he produced 41 points (20 goals and 21 assists) in 35 games. Good enough for 28th in the nation, as well as tied for fourteenth in P/GP. He’s projected to become a bottom-6 forward who can chip in offensively.
He’ll have the opportunity to battle for a roster spot in Detroit at training camp. Some seasoning in the AHL wouldn’t hurt, but he’ll certainly be in the mix for an NHL job. There will be steep competition, however, with the likes of Evgeny Svechnikov and Michael Rasmussen lurking.
Hopefully Pope hasn’t committed any sins!
