The Detroit Red Wings are 9-1 in their last 10 games against the Nashville Predators. The Red Wings are hoping that this trend continues when they visit the Predators in their season opener on Saturday night.

The Red Wings made the playoffs for 25 consecutive years from 1990-91 through 2015-16. They haven’t made the playoffs since then, recording three straight losing seasons with a combined record of 95-115-36 over that stretch. After seeing him build the Tampa Bay Lightning into one of the league’s best teams, the Red Wings signed former captain and team legend Steve Yzerman to be their executive vice president and general manager this offseason. Detroit is in good hands, but the transformation back into a contender will not happen overnight.

On paper, the Red Wings are expected to finish near the bottom of the NHL in the standings while the Predators are a potential Stanley Cup contender. This should be a favorable spot for Nashville, but Detroit always seems to have the Preds’ number, which adds an interesting wrinkle to this matchup.
