The Detroit Red Wings are 8-3 in their last 11 road games against the Edmonton Oilers. The Red Wings will try to snap out of a three-game losing streak with a road win over the Oilers on Friday night.
Detroit is a +170 underdog on the NHL odds in Edmonton at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. With Jimmy Howard getting the first start on a back-to-back on Thursday night, Jonathan Bernier will likely start in goal for the Red Wings on Friday against the Oilers, who are -200 home favorites.
Red Wings at Oilers | OddsShark Matchup Report
Since opening the season with a 3-1 record through their first four games, the Red Wings have been on the wrong side of three straight lopsided losses, losing 5-2 at home to the Toronto Maple Leafs and 5-1 on the road to both the Vancouver Canucks and the Calgary Flames. Detroit is badly lacking in scoring depth, and one player they’d love to see snap out of his early-season slump is Andrea Athanasiou, who had a breakout season last year with 30 goals but has not found the back of the net so far in five game this season.
The Red Wings are 5-3 in their last eight games on the road per the OddsShark NHL Database.
Edmonton has been one of the biggest early surprises of the 2019-20 season with an impressive 6-1 start through seven games. The Oilers somehow managed to move Milan Lucic and his awful contract to the Calgary Flames in exchange for James Neal, who was also coming off of a bad season in 2018-19. While Lucic has recorded zero goals and one assist in eight games with the Flames, Neal is tied for the league lead in goals with eight.
Connor McDavid leads the NHL in points with 17, and Leon Draisaitl is in second place with 15 points.
Friday night’s total is set at 6.5 goals at online betting sites. The OVER is 4-1 in Edmonton’s last five games against Eastern Conference opponents.
These two teams are trending in very different directions at the moment. Edmonton has scored four or more goals in five of its last six games, so the Red Wings will likely need a big day on offense to have a shot at the upset in this one.
