The Detroit Red Wings have assigned forward Jonatan Berggren to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League, the NHL club announced Saturday evening.
Detroit also officially announced veteran defensemen Dan Renouf and Luke Witkowski, both of whom cleared waivers Saturday afternoon, have been sent to the Griffins.
Berggren, 21, was picked 33rd overall by the Red Wings in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. He spent the previous three seasons playing exclusively for Skellefteå AIK in the Swedish Hockey League, scoring an impressive 12 goals and 45 points in 49 games with the club in 2020–21.
The Red Wings signed Berggren to a three-year entry-level NHL contract on May 20, 2021. He’ll start his first North American professional season in Grand Rapids.
Now that Berggren has been assigned and both Renouf and Witkowski have officially been cut, Detroit’s training camp roster features 32 players (soon to be 31, pending Calvin Pickard exiting waivers):

- Defensemen (9): Nick Leddy, Filip Hronek, Marc Staal, Gustav Lindström, Seth Barton, Moritz Seider, Danny DeKeyser, Troy Stecher, Jordan Oesterle.
- Goaltenders (3): Thomas Greiss, Alex Nedeljkovic, Calvin Pickard.
Detroit played its final pre-season game Saturday, defeating the Buffalo Sabres by a 3-1 score. The Red Wings will play their first game of the regular season on Oct. 14 when they host the Tampa Bay Lightning.
