Detroit headed into Chicago to take on the Blackhawks in a lottery division matchup. Despite taking an early lead, the Red Wings preceded to suffer another 2nd period collapse and fell by a final of 4-2. Here’s our game recap:
Game Recap: 
  • 1st Period: Dylan Larkin took a rare penalty just 20 seconds into the game, but the Red Wings were able to kill the penalty off, and not long after a return to full strength, it was the Blackhawks who were short-handed (Dominik Kubalik went to the box). It took Detroit under 40 seconds to strike on the power play, with Filip Zadina wiring a brilliant shot from the circle into the top corner of the net, hitting the water bottle in the process (assists to Larkin and Hronek):
  • 1st Period: Play mellowed out after the early goal, with Chicago hitting the crossbar once. Detroit had another power play in the later stages of the period, getting a few good looks but came up empty and shortly after getting back to 5 on 5, Patrik Nemeth let a shot go from the point that was deflected by Luke Glendening into the back of the night, after a moon bounce from the ice (assists to Nemeth and Darren Helm):
  • 1st Period: Chicago had one power-play in the last two minutes of the period but came up empty. 2-0 Detroit after one. Shots were 12-8 in the first.
  • 2nd Period: The first 5 minutes included another Wings power play (nothing), and a muffed 2-on-1 attempt for the Blackhawks, leaving the game at 2-0 Detroit. From there, it was almost 10 minutes of tranquility with one small and empty Chicago power play following a Brian Lashoff hook on Kirby Dach. But then the Hawks erupted, scoring two goals with just under 5 minutes to go in the period. First it was Dylan Strome thanks to some lackadaisical defense by Madison Bowey and Robby Fabbri. 2-1 Detroit:
  • 2nd Period: This was followed by Dylan Sikura, with help from an ugly turnover by Trevor Daley and a fortunate bounce in front of the net, resulting in an easy, empty net goal. 2-2 tie:
  • 2nd Period: The Wings were able to limp to the intermission tied at 2 however, with the Hawks outshooting Detroit 6-5 in that period
  • 3rd Period: Play continued mostly uninterrupted and fairly even throughout the first 8.5 minutes of the third period until things started to crumble for Detroit. On a possession that saw Trevor Daley injured, Darren Helm lost track of Adam Boqvist and allowed the Swedish defender to walk in close and fire his second career goal past Jimmy Howard to make it 3-2 Chicago:
  • 3rd Period: The Red Wings had a few decent chances later on in the period but couldn’t generate much with the empty net, leading to a Blackhawks empty netter to seal the game. Final score: 4-2 Chicago.
Motor City MVP
I don’t know if he was really the MVP, but Filip Zadina produced the one truly joyous moment in this game, and that’s what I care about, so we’ll give the award to the young Czech.
