It was today in 2013 that the Detroit Red Wings signed veteran Daniel Alfredsson to a one-year, $5.5-million AAV contract.

Alfredsson joined the Red Wings after a long, successful 1178 career with the Ottawa Senators, he wanted to chase a Stanley Cup and that’s how he landed in Detroit. The Red Wings had a strong season placing fourth in the Atlantic Division, but lost to the Boston Bruins in the first round of the playoffs.

But in and of itself, Alfredsson had a really strong season for Detroit. In 68 games, he scored 18 goals and a team-high 49 points. He was a great contributor at 41-years-old and was a big reason why Detroit even made the playoffs in their first season in the Eastern Conference.

The veteran-laden Red Wings posted a 39-28-15 record, however, they were no match for the Bruins that finished atop the league an were eliminated in four games.
