It appears Steve Yzerman and the Detroit Red Wings are preparing to weaponize their cap space to make similar deals to that of the Marc Staal trade.
During Saturday’s Headlines segment on Sportsnet, Chris Johnston said the Red Wings could be preparing to make more moves like that to acquire cap space and assets from teams in a crunch.
Detroit acquired Staal and a second round pick in exchange for future considerations that are believed to be nothing. In doing so, the Red Wings will have Staal dress and play out the final year of his contract paying him $5.7-million.
According to Puckpedia, the Red Wings have $25-million in cap space heading into the offseason.
