The Detroit Red Wings wasted little time in filling the managerial void created by Pat Verbeek’s departure for the Anaheim Ducks.
Verbeek, 57, was named the Ducks’ general manager on Thursday after spending the previous three years as the Red Wings’ assistant GM.
A long-time associate of Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman throughout his time in Tampa Bay and both his managerial tenures in Detroit, Verbeek was also the GM of the Grand Rapids Griffins before leaving for Anaheim.
On Friday, the Red Wings announced Shawn Horcoff’s promotion from being the director of player development to fill both of Verbeek’s vacated roles. Horcoff, 43, will serve as the Red Wings’ assistant GM while managing the day-to-day operations of the Griffins.
Horcoff had previously served as the Red Wings’ director of player development since 2016.
A veteran of 1,008 regular-season NHL games, Horcoff played with the Edmonton Oilers, Dallas Stars, and Anaheim Ducks and scored 511 total points in his career that spanned from 2000 to 2016. The 6’1″, 210-lb centre scored 19 points in 24 games during the Oilers’ run to the 2006 Stanley Cup Final.
