The Detroit Red Wings have placed forward @Gemel Smith on waivers, according to a report by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.
Smith, 27, has appeared in three games with the Red Wings after being claimed off waivers from the Tampa Bay Lightning on Jan. 19.
Both Gemel and @Givani Smith (Gemel’s 23-year-old younger brother) played for the Red Wings against the Minnesota Wild on Monday. It marked the first time that the two Smiths had ever suited up together in the same game.
In three contests with the Red Wings this season, the elder Smith recorded an assist and averaged 6:46 of ice-time. He fought Los Angeles Kings forward @Brendan Lemieux during his Red Wings debut on Feb. 2.
If Smith clears waivers, he’ll likely be assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League.
