The Detroit Red Wings are calling up Bob Kaser.
The longtime Grand Rapids Griffins broadcaster will do radio play-by-play for tonight’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes, subbing in for Ken Kal, who is recovering from a lost voice.
This isn’t Kaser’s first Red Wings call. Back in 2016, he filled in for Kal, who again was recovering from a lost voice, announcing a handful of games.
Two years ago, he called it “a dream come true” and mentioned he never thought he would get an opportunity to call an NHL game.
Kaser, who is in his 40th year of broadcasting and 19th season with the Griffins, won the AHL’s 2009-10 Ellery Award for excellence in radio broadcasting and is a two-time International Hockey League Broadcaster of the Year. Kaser won his seventh broadcast excellence award from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters in 2016, and he has three Michigan Associated Press radio awards.
