The Detroit Red Wings have submitted their opening roster for the 2021–22 season, notably featuring rookies Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider.
The roster features 13 forwards, eight defensemen, and two goaltenders. Here’s the positional breakdown:
  • Forwards (13): Filip Zadina, Robby Fabbri, Mitchell Stephens, Lucas Raymond, Pius Suter, Michael Rasmussen, Carter Rowney, Givani Smith, Tyler Bertuzzi, Dylan Larkin, Adam Erne, Sam Gagner, Vladislav Namestnikov
  • Defensemen (8): Nick Leddy, Filip Hronek, Marc Staal, Gustav Lindström, Moritz Seider, Danny DeKeyser, Troy Stecher, Jordan Oesterle
  • Goaltenders (2): Thomas Greiss, Alex Nedeljkovic
PuckPedia confirmed later on Monday that the Red Wings will start the season with $12,464,443 of space underneath the $81.5 million salary cap.
Forwards Joe Veleno, Riley Barber, and Taro Hirose have been assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League, the Red Wings announced Monday.
Barber and Hirose were placed on waivers Sunday and cleared the following day, allowing them to be sent down; Veleno does not require waivers to be assigned to the Griffins.
The Red Wings also announced Jakub Vrána will start the season on injured reserve; Vrána is set to miss at least four months with a shoulder injury.
Detroit has also designated center Kyle Criscuolo and defenseman Seth Barton as injured non-roster players to start the season. When healthy, Criscuolo and Barton will likely be assigned to Grand Rapids.
Finally, Bobby Ryan was released from his professional tryout on Monday. Here’s what Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman had to say about the decision, as shown in the official opening roster press release:
“We felt that Bobby had a good preseason for us, but due to roster limitations, we aren’t able to offer him a contract at this time,” said Red Wings executive vice president and general manager Steve Yzerman. “We will continue to evaluate whether there is an opportunity for Bobby in Detroit as the 2021-22 season begins.”
Detroit will play its 2021–22 season opener on Oct. 14, hosting the Tampa Bay Lightning at Little Caesars Arena for a game at 7:30 p.m. ET.
