Detroit Red Wings defenseman @Marc Staal has been nominated for the 2022 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy by the Detroit chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association.
The Masterton Trophy is awarded annually to the NHL player who “best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to the game.” Philadelphia Flyers forward @Oskar Lindblom received the award in 2021.
Each of the NHL’s 32 teams has a nominee for the Masterton Trophy (selected by their local PHWA chapter), all of which are listed below; the PHWA will conduct a runoff poll to determine finalists and a winner prior to the NHL Awards ceremony in June.
Staal, 35, has three goals and 16 points in 71 games this season, his second with the Red Wings and his 15th in the National Hockey League. The veteran defenseman has had a late-career resurgence in Detroit after his long tenure with the New York Rangers came to an unceremonious conclusion in 2020.
The PHWA’s official website describes each nominee’s case for the Masterton Trophy, including Staal:
At 35 years old, Staal remains a stalwart presence on the back end, where his size and calm demeanor provides stability. Staal plays smart and effectively (he’s the only Wing who has played more than 60 games and retained a plus rating). He appeared in his 1,000th game on March 12, and is on pace to play 73 games this season, embodying perseverance and consistency in the twilight of his career.
Staal is set to become an unrestricted free agent from the Red Wings this summer after his one-year contract expires. In 1,019 career NHL regular-season games with Detroit and New York, Staal has 49 goals and 214 points.
