Detroit Red Wings forward @Jakub Vrana tied a long-standing franchise record with his two-goal performance in Tuesday’s 4–3 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The 26-year-old forward tied Danny Grant as the player who took the fewest games to score 20 goals with the Red Wings, achieving that feat in only his 32nd contest since being acquired from the Washington Capitals prior to the 2021 trade deadline.
Vrana’s second goal of Tuesday’s game stood as the winner for Detroit. The Czech winger stripped the puck from Lightning defenseman @Mikhail Sergachev and skated in all alone on a breakaway, beating goaltender @Andrei Vasilevskiy over his blocker to put the Red Wings up by one with 14:51 to play in regulation.
The Red Wings originally acquired Vrana, Richard Panik, and two draft picks from Washington last April in exchange for @Anthony Mantha. Vrana has 12 goals and 17 points in 21 games with the Red Wings this season.
Steve Yzerman and Frank Mahovlich are both in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Vrana reached 20 goals in a Red Wings sweater faster than both of them.
Grant scored 20 goals in his first 32 games of the 1974–75 season, his first since joining the Red Wings from the Minnesota North Stars. In 80 games with the Red Wings that year, Grant scored 50 goals and 86 points.
@Oskar Sundqvist and @Lucas Raymond also scored for the Red Wings in their surprising 4–3 victory over the Bolts on Tuesday. The Wings will return to action on Thursday when they take on the Florida Panthers at FLA Live Arena.
