NHL History: Steve Yzerman scores first career playoff hat trick

The year was 1989. Steve Yzerman was 23 years old and in the peak of his NHL career coming off a season that saw him score 155 points in 80 games.

His Detroit Red Wings had just entered the playoffs and were squaring up against the Chicago Blackhawks in the Norris Division semi-finals. Game one saw the Wings snag a 3-2 W.

And in game two, the Wings weren’t so lucky. Wayne Presley, Dirk Graham and Denis Savard has multiple point night for the Blackhawks as they won 5-4 in overtime.

For Yzerman, it was a big night for him as he scored his first-ever playoff hat trick. He scored the first and last goal of the first period and opened the scoring in the third frame, but it wasn’t enough for the Wings.

In the first overtime period, Duane Sutter scored the game winner spoiling Yzerman’s night.
