WINGS POSTGAME: Hurricanes spoil Zadina’s season debut

Filip Zadina made his season debut for the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday against the Carolina Hurricanes, but it was spoiled in a 2-0 loss, the Red Wings’ sixth loss in a row.

Thoughts and Highlights

  • Zadina played on the second line with Darren Helm and Valtteri Filppula. He recorded three shot attempts and 15:04 of ice time, including 10:03 with Helm and Filppula.
  • Robby Fabbri filled in nicely for Anthony Mantha on the top line, but it’s clear the Red Wings were struggling without their top scorer.
  • The game remained scoreless until midway through the second period, when Sebastian Aho banked a shot off the backboard and found the loose puck in the crease to beat Jimmy Howard.
  • Teuvo Teravainen sealed the win with an empty-net goal on a 6-on-4 penalty kill.

GIF of the Game

The Red Wings mustered just 19 shots on James Reimer and rarely threatened with a quality scoring chance.

Motor City MVP

Jimmy Howard

Yes, he let in a clunker of a goal, but he also made 34 saves and gave his team a chance to win. This season has been a down one for Howard, but this was a bounce-back game for him. It’s too bad he didn’t have any goal support.
