WGD: Game 67: Red Wings vs. Rangers

The Red Wings look to snap their eight game losing streak tonight as they host the New York Rangers. This original six match-up will be the Wings first home game since the passing of Ted Lindsay, so expect a pre-game ceremony with a moment of silence.

As far as play on the ice currently, it’s no secret that the Red Wings have been bad. Since the trade deadline on February 25th, the Wings have accumulated one lousy point and have been outscored 15-5. Needless to say, their season is over and they’re looking towards the draft lottery.

The Rangers are also pretty much out of playoff contention. They’re almost 20 points behind the last wild card team and sold some of their key pieces at the deadline. As front runners in the Panarin sweepstakes, though, their future is looking a little brighter than Detroit’s. They are 3-4-3 in their last 10 games.

This game is going to be messy.

DailyFaceoff has yet to update the lines, but Larkin is out with a back injury, which likely means Nielsen will be bumped up to the top line and Glendening is going to shift back to center the third line. It wouldn’t surprise me to see Blashill completely overhaul these lines. He’s going to need to spread the talent out a little bit more, especially with Luke Witkowski likely drawing in. Don’t be surprised to see Justin Abdelkader on the top line again.

I wouldn’t anticipate any changes to the D-lines, but with Mike Green out for the season, expect Filip Hronek to get a big increase in ice time. Madison Bowey looked better in his last game with the team. I’ll be watching him closely to see how he adapts to his new teammates and new systems.

The Rangers have got some interesting things happening here. Without Kevin Hayes and Mats Zuccarello, they’ve got the newly acquired Brendan Lemieux on the third line and former Red Wings defeneman Brendan Smith playing as a fourth line winger. Very strange.

On the back-end, Kevin Shattenkirk finds himself on the bottom-pair while Brady Skjei anchors the top-pair.

Honestly, there isn’t too much to be concerned about from an opponent’s point of view when it comes to this roster.

BETWEEN THE PIPES

Jimmy Howard vs. Henrik Lundqvist

Obviously, Jimmy Howard is getting the start against the Rangers. He’s got a fantastic record in Madison Square Garden, but he’s 8-3-3 in his career against the blue shirts. He’s been slipping lately, but the Red Wings haven’t given him much help to win games.

Lundqvist has been just okay this season, with a .907 save percentage and 17-17-9 record. Like Howard, he doesn’t have a strong roster in front of him to help him out. He’s 1-3-1 in his last five games.
