Well, it’s the end of this always-daunting West Coast Cali trip… before games against the Blackhawks, Stars, and Penguins.
If there’s such thing as a must-win at this point in the season, this could be it. The Wings are rapidly seeing themselves fall out of the playoff picture and their recent stretch of performances are suggesting this may be the year we see the evergreen playoff streak finally come to a close. Without further ado, here are your lineups for tonight’s game.
The Wings are… well, the Wings. Carrying a total of nine injuries isn’t easy, and they’re carrying an ever-confusing rotating lineup. There’s nothing too original to say about them at this point in the season, but we’ll see if they’re able to generate a repeat of Thursday night’s performance when they slotted in four goals.
The Stanley Cup Finalist last season, the Sharks haven’t looked quite as dangerous this year, sitting third in the Pacific Division with a 23-14-2 record. However, they do sport a division-high +12 goal differential and come in 6-3-1 in their last 10. Losing two nights ago to Minnesota by a 5-4 score, they’re sure to be fired up and well rested heading into this one.
Between the pipes
AHL-starter turned NHL-backup turned NHL starter Jared Coreau? He gets his second consecutive start and third out of the last four… a little confusing for why they’re not turning to Mrazek, but we’ll see if he can get the job done before judging the move too harshly.
Meanwhile, Martin Jones starts on the other end, having allowed five goals on 26 shots in the Sharks’ loss to the Wild on Thursday. Jones has lost three straight starts while posting a 3.37 GAA and .886 SV%. However, he sports a .917 SV% over the year, so don’t expect that trend to continue for too long.
The last time
Remember when the Wings won 6 games in a row earlier this season? Seems like a lifetime ago?
The Sharks were the fourth victim on that streak, losing by a 3-0 score. Gustav Nyquist found the net twice in the second period while AA netted the clincher in the third.
