Well… we’re five days into 2017 and it’s already not going well for the Red Wings. After averaging 3.25 goals per game in their previous four games, things were starting to look up, until they were shutout last night in Anaheim. The power play went 0-for-3 again as it continues to be absolutely dreadful. Their power play sits at 11.4 percent right now, which if the season ended today would be the third worst power play percentage in the last decade—only better than the 2006-07 Blackhawks (11.3%) and the 2013-14 Panthers (10.0%).

If you take the Red Wing fandom out of it for a minute, that final 23-ish minutes of hockey at the Centennial Classic was some of the most exciting hockey that I’ve seen in a long time. With that said, the Red Wings failed to capitalize on a few great chances in overtime and ended up dropping a point to the Maple Leafs.

I hope you all had a wonderful New Year's Eve and I assume the majority of you are a little groggy while reading this. The Red Wings vs. Maple Leafs. It doesn't get any better than that. OK, maybe it could be at The Big House, but BMO Field looks great and the scene today should great. People often forget during these outdoor games that there is a huge two points still on the line and the Red Wings certainly every point they can get.

It’s Daniel Alfredsson night in Ottawa. After spending 17 years in Ottawa and one with the Red Wings, Alfredsson will have his No.11 retired in Ottawa tonight. The Swedish centre had 426 goals and 682 assists (1108 points) in 1178 career games with the Senators. The Red Wings did not record the win during the 1997 Stanley Cup celebration game on Tuesday, so we’ll see how they do on Alfie Night tonight.

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas break, but it’s time to get back to watching hockey and hopefully the break served the Red Wings well and they come back rejuvenated and ready to make a run.
